Chapter 22

Jaromir had never run so fast in his whole life. The game had ended the second he had felt that Megan was in danger. Now he wasn't out to hunt her. Now he wanted to save her, and all he could do was pray that he wasn't too late.

He didn't know what was going on, but he felt Megan's fear. It had been a sharp and painful emotion that had sent his need to protect her into a frenzy. The problem was that he didn't know where Megan was, and Shane had done a poor job protecting her.

Shane ran right behind him while Jaromir tried to find Megan's scent. It wasn't the easiest. Her scent crossed itself over several times. She had been running around a lot instead of standing still in one place. That was a smart way to hide from him. It confused his nose, but right now it was the last thing he needed. He had to find her fast. He had to find out what was going on.

Her fear had subsided some, but it was still there. She felt tense. Thankfully, the bond was still new and fresh. It made it easier for him to feel her, but it would fade soon and within a day or two it would be gone unless they didn't bond for good. He intended to do that as soon as he made her realize that they belonged together.

He didn't want to deny it. He had already accepted it. Megan was his. She was his mate, his woman, his queen. He would make her see it too. He knew that she felt it, that there was something special between them.

But first he had to save her from whatever was scaring her. Her scent led him upstairs. He stopped many times and took a sniff before he chose a direction. Shane did the same thing and together they had somehow managed to find the right place after several minutes of frantic searching. Megan's scent led them to the attic. Jaromir knew they were at the right place because her scent became stronger. What worried him was that there was another scent there as well. There was no mistaking who it belonged to.

Jillian.

For a split second, Jaromir smiled to himself. His future queen was smart. Hiding in the attic was a good idea. The attic was huge with many corners and shadows to hide in. The old scents from everything that was stored in there made it more difficult for him to track her scent. He just hoped it would be easy to find her in there now. Whatever was going on was not good.

Jaromir didn't just experience her fear. He felt his fear as well. He had never been this scared in his entire life. He had finally found the one who was meant for him, and something told him he was close to losing her before she even became his for good. This chance would never come again. If he lost her, he would be on his own as long as he lived, and he had a long life ahead of him.
